The Lake State Theater Dept. is holding auditions for A. R. Gurney's "The Dining Room." No experience or preparation is necessary. For those who are interested in working back stage, please stop at the same audition times and fill out a crew form. Students can earn credit by participating in the production! The play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for special occasions. The action includes a mosaic of interrelated scenes -- some funny, some touching, some rueful. The actors change roles, personalities and ages as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother's infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn't recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home, and more. This play is big on humor and abundant humanity.
You'll start with squirt guns and a coin or trinket and you'll be turned loose on campus. If you get squirted, you must hand your coin over to the person who squirted you. Return your coins to the Galley by Sept. 30. The winner, who will get prizes or bonus bucks, is the person with the most coins.
