Ben Mitchell grew up in a devout household in the central Upper Peninsula of Michigan where emphasis was placed on helping others. He traveled with his father to places such as Kenya and Peru on short-term medical missions. When he was in Kenya, a missionary explained that engineers have the greatest potential to influence the largest number of people. During high school, Ben participated in a youth mission trip to Tijuana. A result of the mission trips, his family decided to adopt three Vietnamese children when he was a junior.

All of these experiences had a great influence on Ben’s outlook on life. He decided to major in mechanical engineering and enrolled at Lake Superior State University. Near the end of his senior year, he decided to volunteer for the Peace Corps to help others.

His two-year commitment began in the fall of 2007 and took Ben to Burkina Faso in western Africa. He resides in the village of Tansila, population 3,000, approximately 10 km from the Mali border. His host organization is the local cotton growers union. It works cooperatively with other villages to improve and expand their production techniques. He serves as an agribusiness advisor as a part of the Small Enterprise Development program which helps create market linkages and assists with the advancement of business skills.

LSSU is one of the newest additions to the Campus Recreation department here at LSSU. By providing each member of Campus Rec with the opportunity to be involved in health benefit programs, that will not only set the track of a healthy and fit lifestyle, but open doors to personalized fitness schedules that we design with each member one on one.

—Where Do I Sign Up—

Signing up for the Health & Wellness program can be done in a few different ways.

  1. Come on down to the Student Activity Center and talk to one of our staff members. They'll be more than happy to give you a packet of information, that will explain everything that we offer in our programs
  2. Sign up online on our IMleagues.com webpage. This webpage will have all of the current programs that we offer, and each programs schedule.
  3. Contact one of our staff members via email or phone call , and they will be more than happy to assist you!

Q - I'm not used to working out in groups, are there programs for me?
A - Absolutely! Here at Campus Rec, we strive to meet every members' needs. If you would like a fitness program that is specifically designed for working out alone, we will be more than happy to assist you build that program.

Q - Does it cost anything to be a member of the programs offered in Health & Wellness?
A - In almost all situations there is ZERO cost to our members to participate in the programs we offer. We will never charge for our trainers, and we will never charge for the personalized service we offer. There are some programs that may be offered through us, but from an outside vendor (5k Races, Marathons, Beach Body inc., etc.).

Q - Can I be a trainer?
A - If you're looking for a job with us, you can apply online on my.lssu.edu under anchor access. Please attach a complete resume, and certifications if applicable.
