LSSU Achievement Scholarship

  • Value: variable — non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit based; must have earned at least 26 LSSU credits; preference will be given to students who are not current recipients of any LSSU scholarship and who have demonstrated scholastic achievement and/or GPA improvement during their LSSU experience.
  • Selected by: recommendation of the Retention Committee

Dr. Robert Arbuckle Scholarship

  • Value: variable – renewable up to 3 years
  • Criteria: minimum 3.0 GPA; financial need is considered
  • Selected by: Financial Aid Committee

Bethel Lodge #358 Free & Accepted Masons of Michigan Scholarship

  • Value: variable — non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit and need based; must be a resident of Michigan; minimum 3.0 GPA; must be a child, step-child, or grandchild of a member of a Lodge under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan

Mary R. Gray Memorial Scholarship

  • Value: variable — non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit based; must have earned at least 26 LSSU credits, preference will be given to non-traditional students (out of high school at least one year before college)

Galen H. Harrison Scholarship

  • Value: variable—non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit and need based; must be a Pickford High School graduate who has been accepted to attend LSSU by April 1st of their high school senior year; must be an incoming LSSU freshman; must have earned a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Curriculum: biology, chemistry, geology, nursing, mathematics, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, environmental chemistry, environmental science, or mechanical engineering

Crystal L. Housding Memorial Scholarship

  • Value: variable – non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit based; must have graduated from an Emmet County high school; preference given to students with financial need; preference given to students who demonstrate volunteer involvement and leadership skills.

Roberts P. & Ella B. Hudson Foundation Scholarship

  • Value: variable – renewable
  • Criteria: merit based; must have a high school or transfer GPA of 3.0 or higher; must have a graduate from a Chippewa County high school, must be a student enrolled at LSSU by April 1st of the current academic year
  • Selected by: Financial Aid Committee

Amy Ignatowski Memorial Award  

  • Value: up to $250 – non-renewable
  • Criteria: must be an active U.S. Coast Guard member, Coast Guard Reservist or their dependents from USCG Sector Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Active duty Coast Guard members must have completed a minimum of six months of military service and reservists must be in drilling status. Special application required.
  • Selected by: an inter-disciplinary committee – a member of the Ignatowski family, USCG Education Service Officer, a representative of the LSSU Foundation and a representative of the ISCG – Sector Sault Ste. Marie, MI

Laker Student Leader Scholarship

  • Value: $1,000 — non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit based; must have earned at least 56 credits at LSSU
  • Selected by: nominations from LSSU faculty and staff with recommendation by the selection committee

LSSU Alumni Association Legacy Endowment Award

  • Value: $1000-non-renewable
  • Criteria: must be a child or grandchild of an LSSU alumnus who is a current dues-paying member of the LSSU Alumni Association; candidates must complete a Legacy Endowment Application and a 250 essay; minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Selected by: The LSSU Alumni Association Board of Directors with final approval by the Financial Aid Office

Dr. Kenneth F. Light Memorial Award

  • Value: variable – non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit and need- based; Preference will be given to students who are not current recipients of any LSSU scholarship and who have demonstrated scholastic achievement
  • Curriculum: any
  • Selected by: Financial Aid Committee

Bill and Diana Munsell Scholarship

  • Value: variable—renewable
  • Criteria: merit and need based; graduate of a Chippewa, Luce, or Mackinac County public high school; minimum GPA of 3.0; if no eligible candidate the scholarship may be awarded to current LSSU students who have earned at least 26 credits and meet all listed criteria

Thomas J. O’Neil Memorial Scholarship

  • Value: $1000 — renewable
  • Criteria: merit and need based; resident of Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan; earned at least 26 LSSU credits, minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Note: If there is not an eligible candidate from the EUP, Michigan residents may be considered
  • Curriculum: human services preferred, teaching may be considered
  • Selected by: Financial Aid Committee through scholarship sign-up

Leslie O’Polka Memorial Scholarship

  • Value: variable—renewable
  • Criteria: need based; graduate of De Tour High School; current LSSU student must have earned 26 LSSU credits

Kelsey Raffaele Memorial Scholarship

  • Value: variable—non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit based; minimum of GPA 3.0; new freshman graduate from Sault Area High School; Preference to students who are members of the Business Professionals of America Organization (BPA); if no eligible candidate then a SAHS graduate majoring in computer science or any business program may be considered
  • Selected by: recommendation by the Sault Area High School Academic Awards Committee

Laker Spirit Scholarship

  • Value: variable — non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit based; must have completed three semesters or more as a full-time student at LSSU; must have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher; must provide two collaborating references of involvement; must demonstrate involvement in extra-curricular and campus activities
  • Selected by: recommendation by the selection committee

Sault Ste. Marie Business and Professional Scholarship

  • Value: variable — renewable
  • Criteria: student who has returned to college after at least a two-year interruption and who has established a college cumulative GPA of 3.0 after two semesters of study; restricted to applicants from Chippewa, Mackinac or Luce County

Father Donald (Don) Shiroda Scholarship

  • Value: variable – non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit and need-based; Must be a volunteer to a Chippewa County Charity that benefits and promotes women’s causes and be registered with the LSSU Volunteer Center
  • Selected by: Financial Aid Committee

Larry R. Smart Scholarship

  • Value: variable—non-renewable
  • Criteria: minimum 3.0 GPA; financial need may be considered
  • Curriculum: any curriculum except engineering

Edward C. and Hazel L. Stephenson Foundation Scholarship

  • Value: 60% of tuition and fees, non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit based; minimum 3.0 GPA; must be a full-time student; earned at least 26 LSSU credits; graduated from Michigan high school or the Great Lakes region; preference given to those who have overcome disabilities or other hardships in attaining his/her level of academic achievement

Randy G. Sanders Memorial Veterans Scholarship

  • Value: up to $1,000 – non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit and need-based; must be Michigan resident who has been honorably discharged from the military
  • Curriculum: any
  • Selected by: Financial Aid Committee

William “Bud” and Gretchen Weber Scholarship

  • Value: $500 — non-renewable
  • Criteria: merit based; preference given to those with demonstrated volunteerism who graduated from Sault Area High School


Pam Williamson Upward Bound Award

  • Value: variable—non-renewable
  • Criteria: must have participated in the Upward Bound program at LSSU Arts and Letters
