Title: Head Women's Volleyball Coach
 
Function and Responsibility
Under the general supervision of the Director of Athletics/Head Hockey Coach to recruit, coach, promote, and administrate the operation of the Lake Superior State University women's volleyball program.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
Implementation of a recruiting program that is consistent with institutional, conference, and NCAA rules.
Ability to pass institutional, conference, and NCAA rules compliance testing necessary for recruiting.

Recruit student-athletes who possess the academic and athletic skills needed to be successful at Lake Superior State University and to successfully compete in women's volleyball at Lake Superior State University.

Responsible for recommending to the Director of Athletics the awarding of athletic grant-in-aid in accordance with institutional, conference, and NCAA rules.

Responsible for the development of players, team selection for game participation, and travel in compliance with all institutional rules and regulations.

Responsible for notifying the Director of Athletics and building management staff, in a timely fashion, of practice schedules and game dates so that the facility can run in an orderly fashion.

Responsible for recommending to the Director of Athletics a schedule that meets the institutional philosophy, that will be approved by the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee, and that fits the budgetary philosophy of the institution.

Responsible for insuring that class scheduling meets the academic needs of the student-athletes, and that the student-athletes' scheduling is done with the approval of the appropriate academic advisors.

Responsible for requesting housing for players through the Director of Athletics and the Director of Housing to insure quality living conditions for the student-athletes in compliance with housing regulations.

Responsible for travel arrangements and lodging for the team, in conjunction with the Director of Athletics, under the rules and regulations of the institution.

Responsible for advising any booster organization on compliance with rules and regulations of the institution and the organizations it belongs to.

Responsible for directing the assistant coach(es) in the area of the women's volleyball program, including recommendations to the Director of Athletics on the hiring, firing, and performance evaluation of assistant coach(es).

Responsible for the scheduling of travel for the assistant coach(es), in consultation with the supervisor of activity classes where there may be such responsibility.

Responsible for presenting, in a timely fashion, a budget and working within the framework of that budget, as approved by the Director of Athletics. Major areas of budgetary control include equipment purchases, travel, recruiting, telephone, contracted services, guarantees, teams costs during vacation periods, and rentals. Other areas include, but are not limited to postage, printing, awards, subscriptions, advertisements, and miscellaneous items.

Responsible for working with the Director of Athletics, Sports Information Director, and the University's Public Relations Office in the promotion of the volleyball program and the Athletic Department.

The Head Coach is expected to follow the rules and regulations of the department and the institution prescribed in the University Procedures Manual.

The Women's Volleyball Coach will be given first choice in administering volleyball camps and clinics; acceptance of such includes the organization and implementation of such events within the rules and regulations of the institution.

Any activity in areas outside of the above names will require consultation and approval by the Director of Athletics. Examples include: any fund raising activities; the hiring of staff for camps and clinics; any capital campaign projects.

Responsible for recommending the officials for all home volleyball matches.

Responsible for assisting facility management staff with personnel necessary to be used in the game management.

Responsible for timely reporting of playing and practice schedules as legislated by the NCAA.

Responsible for assisting the scheduling of educational programs, i.e., substance abuse, date rape, and HIV awareness programs as necessary.

Responsible for assisting in administration, in a timely fashion, of NCAA rules compliance programs for the student-athletes.

Violation of institutional, conference, and NCAA rules may be just cause for dismissal.
Will report to the Coordinator of Recreational Programming for the duties of teaching in the Recreation Department. Scheduling of classes will be done in conjunction with the Director of Athletics and the Academic Department Head.

Responsible for any administrative duties assigned by the Director of Athletics that are necessary in the performance of the administration and operation of the athletic program.

Performs related duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree is required. Experience in college volleyball coaching at the assistant or head coaching level; experience in college volleyball playing preferred; must have knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations; must be able to pass any institutional, conference, or national association testing required in order to fulfill the requirements of the position.
 
Physical and Mental Demands
Adequate health and fitness to maintain long hours, a busy schedule, and travel with team as required. Use of gross motor skills for instruction and coaching of team players; ability to see, hear, and speak clearly, with or without use of aids, to represent the University in public appearances; full use of hands, arms, feet and legs to perform coaching and administrative functions; mental capacity to organize, schedule, teach, recruit and implement rules and regulations; ability to work with numbers to prepare and implement budgets.
