Title: Director of Native American Student Services
 
Function and Responsibility
Under administrative direction from the vice president for student programs and services, responsible for direction of the Native American Center and its programs on and off campus, and for the coordination of those programs with other offices in the academic and student services areas.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as a resource and mentor for Native American students attending Lake Superior State University; acquaint students with the services and benefits available to them through the various departments on campus; refer to peer counselors as needed; serve as the advisor to the Native American Student Organization; create programming which encourages and facilitates Native American students to access all available support services.

Actively assist in the recruitment of Native American students; attend college/career day activities and related functions; identify and contact organizations which work with high school students and parents to acquaint them with the benefits and opportunities available to Native American students throughout Michigan's higher education system; and work with appropriate university organizations to facilitate the enrollment and retention of Native American students at Lake Superior State University.

Assist tribal organizations and other private agencies to facilitate the creation of short-term instructional programs and job training as required by the Native American community and its various enterprises. Serve as the university's liaison with Michigan's Office of Indian Affairs, the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Indian Education, Bay Mills Community College, and with tribal organizations throughout Michigan and Ontario.

Direct activities for the Native American Center to include student and/or alumni, and other functions to serve as a focal point for Native American students. Work with university staff and faculty to acquaint them with the special needs and requirements of the Native American student population; assist academic department heads and the director of continuing education to create academic courses and other learning experiences of specific interest to the Native American population.

Actively seek grant funding for center programs and operation, and administer and coordinate grants as assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in an academic discipline; three to five years experience in higher education, and/or counseling; knowledge of and experience dealing with tribal organizations; communication and organizational skills.
 
Physical and Mental Demands
Adequate physical fitness to be able to sit and concentrate for long periods of time; use of fine motor skills to operate computer; problem solving ability; ability to understand and work with numbers; ability to see, hear, and speak with or without the use of aids to perform normal office tasks.
