Ben Mitchell grew up in a devout household in the central Upper Peninsula of Michigan where emphasis was placed on helping others. He traveled with his father to places such as Kenya and Peru on short-term medical missions. When he was in Kenya, a missionary explained that engineers have the greatest potential to influence the largest number of people. During high school, Ben participated in a youth mission trip to Tijuana. A result of the mission trips, his family decided to adopt three Vietnamese children when he was a junior.

All of these experiences had a great influence on Ben’s outlook on life. He decided to major in mechanical engineering and enrolled at Lake Superior State University. Near the end of his senior year, he decided to volunteer for the Peace Corps to help others.

His two-year commitment began in the fall of 2007 and took Ben to Burkina Faso in western Africa. He resides in the village of Tansila, population 3,000, approximately 10 km from the Mali border. His host organization is the local cotton growers union. It works cooperatively with other villages to improve and expand their production techniques. He serves as an agribusiness advisor as a part of the Small Enterprise Development program which helps create market linkages and assists with the advancement of business skills.

This Week---

Announcements!!

Easter Weekend there will be normal hours on Friday, April 18th from 6:00am - 10:00pm and Saturday, April 19th from 8:00am - 8:00pm, however Sunday, April 20th will be CLOSED.

The Central Heating Plant's annual shut down from maintenance is scheduled to begin the evening of May 4th and continue through May 9th. Due to this shut down there will be no heating or hot water in the Norris building including the locker rooms.

The Ice in the Taffy Abel Arena is being taken off Thursday April 10th. No more ice will be available for the rest of the semester.

The Golf Practice Room is now OPEN!!! Information about this center can be found on the Golf Practice Room link found on the right.

The Rock Climbing Wall is now OPEN to LSSU students ONLY at this time!! It is open Monday - Thursday from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. Make sure to bring your student ID.

About the Norris Center

The James Norris Physical Education Center, that includes over 275,000 square feet of space, is the busiest building on campus and the University building that is used most by the surrounding community. The Norris center is used for everything from aerobics classes to concerts and youth camps. It has served as a host for a number of regional high school basketball and hockey tournaments, as well as band camps. More information can be found on the About page
