LSSU photojournalism class presents news round-up, part two

Posted: November 16th, 2013

(Note: These are photo releases generated by students in LSSU's JOUR220 photojournalism class. Look for further installments as the semester progresses.)

FIRST DUSTING – 'Twas one month into fall, and all across campus, not a creature was stirring, for snow was upon us. The cycles were stashed by the bike racks with care, in hopes that a warm-up soon would be there. Doggerel aside, snow arrived on LSSU's campus shorty before Halloween. If fuzzy caterpillars are an indicator, April's graduation day will be sunny and mild with plenty of days in between for ice fishing. (Photo by LSSU Photojournalism Student Alex Modrzynski)

HIS CROWDED HOUR – Nathan Rapp, center, prepares to douse or be doused during "Battleship" night in Lake Superior State University's Norris pool on Nov. 6. Students tried to swamp opposing teams while at the same time avoid being swamped. Winners received commemorative towels with which to dry off. The event was part of a wide range of late-night activities that culminated with Great Lake State Weekend, LSSU's annual homecoming for alumni. CROSS-QUARTER PORTRAIT – Lake Superior State University photojournalism student Ashlee Bonnee caps her Halloween handiwork off with a self portrait. Halloween — with its ghosts and horror and disguises — falls between the bountiful harvest of fall (Sept. 22) and the barren onset of winter on Dec. 21. Since up until relatively recently in human history starvation and a potentially cold death lurked around the corner, why not embrace (or maybe even laugh at) our fears, roll the dice with treat-or-treat, and wear a disguise to bluff mortality? The next cross-quarter day, between winter and spring, is Groundhog Day on Feb. 2. (Photo by Ashlee Bonnee)

RINK IN PINK – Members of Lake Superior State University's women's tennis team — Teodora Gavric at the door and Erin Anderson-Scott, seated foreground — staff the Taffy Abel Ice Arena's main entrance during the sixth annual Pink in the Rink weekend, which coincided with LSSU's first home conference hockey series. Funds were raised by auctioning game-worn jerseys and gift baskets, selling t-shirts and other commemorative items, community-wide dress-down days, and through the support of generous vendors and sponsors. The event has raised more than $90,000 over the past five years, with all proceeds being going back into the community to support women's and family health causes. PAINTED SPIRIT– Lake Superior State University students (l-r) Kade Leclear, Ryan Campbell, Zach Prause, Sam O'Reilly-Oliveri, Alexis Schefka, Andrea Tillman, Bradley Briner, Emily Gregg, Ciara Johnson, and Anne Serbinski form a wall of fandom during LSSU's first home conference hockey game on Nov. 9. The group only makes an appearance during alumni homecoming, but encourages students to follow in its footsteps for all home games. Friends and associates should consult them on matters of painting and grammar, with an eye towards keeping a Fan Wall (or Walls!) tradition going. (Photo by LSSU Photojournalism Student Kyle Lester)

ERIK THE READY – Lake Superior State University political science alum Erik VanMeerbeeck strikes a game face shortly before snowboarding on a course that he and his LSSU student friends have set up in a Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., back yard. For wont of real snow, the guys create a 20-yard jump and ramp complex from Zamboni ice shavings collected from area arenas. The idea is to hone-up on boarding skills before the real snow arrives. (Photo by LSSU Photojournalism Student Ciara Johnson)

POWDERED CURE – Lake Superior State University students get a dollop of powdered paint during the inaugural Colors 4 Cancer run held Nov. 3 at LSSU. The run's organizers were a Lake State sports events and marketing class that raised money for the War Memorial Hospital Oncology Dept. and its Road to Recovery Bus, which provides transportation to Eastern U.P. residents who need rides to Petoskey for cancer treatment. Proceeds are still being tabulated, but the event attracted more than 100 runners that raised more than $3,000. (Photo by LSSU Photojournalism Student Cody Krehn)

ZOMBIE PATROL – Sault, Mich., police department officer Mike Troyer makes an appearance of zombie patrolman during the city's annual zombie parade held the Friday before Halloween. Kids and their families stage floats and games and collect treats from downtown merchants. Young Brian Duff hangs out the cruiser's window at the wonder of it all, while his mom, Tiffany, looks on from the front seat. (Photo by LSSU Photojournalism Student Paul Burke)

DON'T LOOK BACK – Lake Superior State University photojournalism student Paul Burke conducts a visual study from the point of view of him, the driver, before brushing and scraping off. Some self delusions to get you through winter: Visualize windshield frost as the patina on a favorite beverage; transpose a snowblower's hum with that of a lawnmower's; and envision winter's embrace as stepping into a walk-in cooler during the Dog Days of summer. It's easy if you try. (Photo by LSSU Photojournalism Student Paul Burke)
