LSSU seeks to make decision on president in December

Posted: November 23rd, 2013

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Now that the last of three candidates applying for the position of president at Lake Superior State University has visited campus and the community, the LSSU Board of Trustees seeks to make a decision on the position in early December.

Earlier this year, the board appointed a committee representing university, community, and alumni interests to look at candidates, and the committee narrowed the field to three who were invited to Sault Ste. Marie. They are: Thomas Pleger Ph.D., campus executive officer and dean of the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County; Joan Poor Ph.D., provost and vice president of academic affairs at Truman State University; and Neal Weaver Ph.D., vice president of institutional advancement at West Texas A&M University.

“Over the past two weeks, we were very happy to bring these three very strong candidates to Sault Ste. Marie to meet stakeholders on the campus and in the LSSU community,” said Patrick Egan, chair of the search committee and of the LSSU Board of Trustees. “We wish to thank everyone involved.”

Egan said the Board of Trustees is looking forward to making a decision in the next few weeks.

“We have not set a date that is certain at this point, but the board is unanimous in its intention to make this decision, after careful deliberation, in early December. All three candidates have been notified of this timeline.

“It is going to be a difficult decision,” Egan continued. “We have three distinct candidates, all with strengths, and it is our task to make certain that we make the choice that is the best fit.”

Egan said the board expressed its gratitude to the search committee for the depth and breadth of the search, and the strong results that came from it. The group worked with executive search firm EFL Associates of Kansas.

“Having to make a difficult choice is the hallmark of a successful search,” he said. “It has taken a lot of time and effort on the committee's part and we truly appreciate their effort.”

An announcement of a board meeting date will follow soon. More information on the three candidates is available on the university’s website. -LSSU-
