SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- Inclement weather forced the cancellation of the Lake Superior State University financial aid workshop scheduled for earlier this month at Sault Area High School, so LSSU and Sault High have put together two workshops to make up for it.
Meanwhile, financial aid workshops in other Eastern Upper Peninsula communities are continuing this month, too.
High school seniors and parents interested in learning more about college financial aid and its availability will be able to attend a workshop at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 or 6 p.m. on Feb. 6, both in Sault High’s Strahl Theater. A full schedule of remaining workshops at other area schools is listed below.
In addition to the college financing information provided at these annual programs, LSSU is adding some informational sessions this year – FAFSA Fridays -- that are geared specifically to assist students and parents fill out information in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a requirement for students applying for federal aid.
The Financial Aid Workshops lead up to the annual College Goal Sunday on February 9, a free workshop that pools a variety of resources geared to help parents and students fill out the FAFSA.
During the Financial Aid Workshops, staff from LSSU’s Financial Aid office are visiting high schools around the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Peninsula to talk to families about scholarships, grants, loans and employment programs, and will advise students how to apply for student aid. Emphasis will be placed on eligibility requirements, how to evaluate an aid offer, and how to complete the FAFSA – all of which should be considered by students and parents, no matter which college the student will be attending. Participants will get an opportunity to ask questions.
“We encourage area families to attend one of these financial aid workshops or take advantage of one of the FAFSA Friday sessions to get help with filling out the FAFSA,” said LSSU Financial Aid Director Deb Faust. “We’ll have one-on-one help during the five FAFSA sessions starting Jan. 31 and running through February.”
