SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University’s wordsmiths are ready for your submissions to the 45th annual banished words list. It’s time to start thinking of getting rid of those words and phrases that have been abused and misused during the past year.
For every New Year’s Day since 1976, the University has issued an annual “List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-Use, Over-Use, or General Uselessness.” Between now and December 5, LSSU will accept nominations sent from all over the world, covering all manner of word or phraseology, which some consider being worthy of exile.
“LSSU’s word banishment tradition is now in its fifth decade, for every new year since 1976, LSSU has received tens of thousands of nominations for the list, which now includes more than 1,000 entries,” stated Dr. Rodney Hanley, LSSU President. We are excited to see this year’s entries.”
“The list is a unique way to celebrate the past year and all the words that annoyed us,” says a spokesman for the word-sifters. “Our goal each year is always the same, we want to bring a smile to people’s faces and share the New Year’s spirit as we all reflect on the past year and forward to the new one.”
Hundreds of words from the fields of academia, advertising, business, the military, sports, and politics have found their way onto the banishment list.
