Summaryof project:Synthesisofnovel3,4-Dihydroquinazolinesforthetestingofanti-cancerandanti-bacterialproperties.
Describeatypicalday:Typicalactivitiesincludedthesynthesisofnovelcompounds,thepurificationofthem,andfinallytheircharacterization.Avarietyofchemicalreactionsweredonetosynthesizethesecompounds,sometakingmultipledaysofreactiontime.Then,purificationwouldbedonewhichalmostalwaysincludedflashcolumnchromatographybutoftenincludedothermethodssuchastheusageofarotaryevaporator,basicsilicaplug,andfiltration.CharacterizationofthecompoundswouldtypicallyuseCarbonNuclearMagneticResonanceandHydrogenNuclearMagneticResonancespectroscopytodeterminetheidentityofthecompoundinquestionandtoassesspurity.Meltingpointswouldalsobetakenifthecompoundsweresolids.Usually,onlyaboutthreeorfouroftheactivitieslistedwouldbeperformedaday.

- Ibecameacquaintedwiththeusageofcatalystsforhydrogenationandgeneralreaction.10%PalladiumonCarbonwasusedalongsidehydrogengastocatalyticallyreducearomaticnitro-compoundstoaromaticamines.
- Ibecameverywellacquaintedwiththeusageofflashcolumnchromatography,whereincompoundsaredissolvedinorganicsolventsarepassedthroughatubeofsilicaslurryinordertoseparatethecompoundsbasedonpolarity.WhileIwasalreadyacquaintedwithflashcolumnchromatographybeforemyjoboverthesummerIbecameevenmoresoduringit.

- Ilearnedhowtobudgetmoney.Iwaspaidminimumwageandwantedtosaveupmoneytouseovertheschoolyear.Learninghowtolivefrugally(Bynecessity)wasinterestingandI’mgladIdiditnotonlyforthelearningexperiencebutalsobecauseInowhavemoneytouseovertheschoolyear.
