ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – Julie A. Vincent ’83 accepts the Lake Superior State University Alumni Association’s Kenneth Shouldice Achievement Award from LSSU President Rodney Hanley (left) and former Laker basketball teammate Karleen Stephens ’83. Stephens introduced and presented Vincent with the citation during a special awards banquet on Nov. 2 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The citation highlights significant achievements of alumni who serve as leaders in the region, state and nation. Vincent is chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology as well as a professor of pediatrics and Welton M. Gersony Professor of Pediatric Cardiology at Columbia University in New York. OUTSTANDING YOUNG ALUMNA – Erin R. Strang accepts the Lake Superior State University Alumni Association’s Paul Ripley Award for Young Alumni from LSSU President Rodney Hanley (left) and LSSU Foundation Board Member Robert Kjolhede ’76 during a special banquet on Nov. 2 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The citation recognizes alumni who have experienced exceptional professional success early in their careers. Strang, who also played Laker volleyball, is a 2002 bachelor of science degree graduate in business administration with a minor in marketing. She is currently president and chief executive officer of the Central Michigan University Research Corporation (CMURC) in Mt. Pleasant. The company is a professional coworking space with an accelerator program that focuses on advancing economic development in the Great Lakes Bay Region. OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS – Edward F. Smith, MD, accepts the Lake Superior State University Alumni Association’s Outstanding Alumnus Award from LSSU Presidnet Rodney Hanley (left) and LSSU Board of Trustees Chair Rodney Nelson ’83 during a special banquet on the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., campus Nov. 2. The citation recognizes alumni for their personal and professional accomplishments and their involvement with LSSU, highlighting the significant achievements of alumni who serve as leaders in our region, state and nation. It is the highest honor presented by the LSSU Alumni Association. Smith, a 1978 cum laude graduate in biology/chemistry from Lake Superior State College, provides oncology services to Mackinac Straits Hospital, Northern Michigan Hematology and Oncology in Petoskey, McLaren Northern Michigan, Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, Mackinac Straits Hematology/Oncology, and War Memorial Hospital.
