The Freshwater Stewardship Corps (FSC) through the Center for Freshwater Research and Education (CFRE) at Lake Superior State University is hosting a cleanup of Ashmun Creek on Saturday, July 20th from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and seeking the community’s help.

Ashmun Creek drains many commercial complexes, causing an accumulation of trash and other debris further downstream where it empties into Ashmun Bay, which is connected to the St. Mary’s River. Participants will be cleaning one portion of the creek to help reduce trash flowing to the river, in the area of the creek closest to the Walmart Garden Center.

Volunteers should pre-register at the Freshwater Stewardship Corps website: lssu.edu/cfre/freshwater-stewardship-corps or at https://www.facebook.com/lssucfre/. The pre-registration process will help FSC estimate food and supply quantities. FSC will have a table set up near the Walmart Garden Center for volunteers to sign in (or register), starting at 9:30 a.m. Family and volunteer organizations are welcome, but minor children need an adult present during the event.

Volunteers should wear boots and dress appropriately for the weather. Gloves and other cleaning materials will be provided. After the cleanup, volunteers are invited to attend a picnic at the cleanup site to enjoy hot dogs, chips, and refreshments. Volunteers will also receive reusable grocery bags as a thank you for their help.

This event is funded by a grant through Michigan’s Volunteer River, Stream, and Creek Cleanup Program. The Freshwater Stewardship Corps focuses on developing stewardship activities that promote Great Lakes health and freshwater awareness by connecting LSSU students and local community members. Their vision is to inspire our community to sustain the health of our Great Lakes. FSC hopes that you will join in taking action toward this vision of Great Lakes freshwater health.
