Why Study the LSSU Paramedic Program?

The LSSU Paramedic Program maintains approval and accreditation by the State of Michigan Department of EMS Education and the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Our program has an established history in successfully preparing candidates to challenge the required NREMT certification exam, utilizing faculty members with extensive experience in the field of EMS. Candidates with the NREMT certification in hand are eligible for entry level Paramedic jobs in all 50 states, with some states requiring additional state-specific training confirmation.

Student Success Stories, Achievements, and Success in the Program

Of the recent Paramedic Programs (2019 through 2023), two graduates are currently in Physician Assistant programs, another is now a Flight Paramedic. Overall 87% NREMT certification pass rate for programs during this period.

Associate Degree vs. Certificate

  • Certificate – designed for the candidate who meets Paramedic Program prerequisites, yet does not plan to obtain a degree. Often completed by EMS personnel currently working as an EMT or AEMT.
  • Associate Degree – designed for the candidate interested in an Associate Degree, and covers the prerequisite elements within the degree plan.

Paramedic Program Prerequisites

  • Current EMT or AEMT certification through NREMT, or Michigan EMS license
  • Current, valid CPR certification (required for Michigan EMS personnel)
  • Completion of college level Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II with grade of ‘C’ or better (LSSU BIOL 121 and 122, or transfer equivalent)
  • Completion of Intermediate Algebra with a grade of ‘C’ or better (LSSU MATH 102 or higher, or transfer equivalent)
