Two Lake Superior State University students whose parents attended Lake State are beneficiaries of the LSSU Alumni Association’s 2017 Alumni Legacy Award. Kye Heimonen of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Daphne Patten from Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., each get a $1,000 for university expenses. Both were among a dozen applicants who submitted a 250-word essay to the selection committee.
The award is given to at least one full-time time LSSU student who has a cumulative GPA of no less than 2.5. Parents or grandparents must be premium members of the LSSU Alumni Association and have attended LSSU, LSSC, or Sault Branch of MTU/MCMT for two years of academic credit. The award does not renew from year to year, but past recipients may reapply.
Heimonen’s father, Harri, graduated in 1995 with a bachelor of science in nursing. His mother, Bridget (MacMichael), graduated in 1996 with a bachelor of science in accounting. Kye is a freshman majoring in general studies and is a member of the track and field team.
Patten’s sponsor is her mother, Teresa (French), who graduated from LSSU in 1990 with a bachelor of science in recreation management. Daphne is a freshman studying forensic chemistry.
The Alumni Legacy Award is underwritten by LSSU Alumni Association premium memberships, revenues from various affinity agreements, and private gifts to the award’s endowed fund.
